The Wild Horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park

To experience the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota is a breathtaking and enriching experience. With every different season, with the changes over time within the wild horse herds, and the surprise appearance of an array of wildlife, I feel a kinship with all of it, and a love of the western wilderness I could never have imagined.
 
Appropriately named the Bad Lands for its extreme shifts in landscape and temperatures, it is, yet, a magnificent and exceptional land, a place of beauty matched with a sense of freedom. It is a park worthy of respect, appreciation, conservation, and protection of its natural state.
 
As a photographer who has trekked in many areas of the world to capture the best shots of horses the Roosevelt Park has challenged me in a way, I never imagined. As the seasons change so do the herds, as do individual dynamics among the horses. Like our own human families, horses may shift their loyalties and relationships. Sibling rivalries and growths spurts can suddenly occur, and the parings of mates can be challenging to all. It has required sensitivity and patience on my part to capture their lives, and a sense of reverence as I approach individual horses and their families — The Wild Herd.
 
I am humbled to be a part of this effort of conservation by producing a photography book. I hope that it may help sustain this exceptional park, and garner more understanding of the importance of the land to the wild herds.

    Deb Kalas Horse Photographer …

    Located along the Little Missouri River in Western Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one of the few national parks to have wild horses. My first trip there was in June 2014 and I fell in love with the horses there. I have been back many times since in different seasons, observing, marveling, and photographing the intimate relationships the horses have with each other. There is always something new to see. I hope you enjoy these photographs as much as I have had making them.
